This paper describes a study investigating the usage of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) and... more This paper describes a study investigating the usage of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) and its impact on language transformation in the context of youth in Arabic-speaking populations, specifically in Saudi Arabia. In particular, this project examined patterns of CMC using BBM and WhatsApp captured in a qualitative diary study comprised of logs and reflection. Gender and individual differences in the CMC patterns and factors contributing to the transformation of language in CMC communication (e.g. Arabizi) are discussed. Design implications are described.

Understanding and conducting ethics is an essential quality for everyone in any field. Due to the... more Understanding and conducting ethics is an essential quality for everyone in any field. Due to the importance of the ethics for individuals and societies, many of universities started to offer ethics courses in their curricula. Their aim is to give students a full understanding of their rights, and how they might act ethically when they face different situations. Since the ethics content can be undesirable course for students, some faculty may face various challenges to teach such courses. Moreover, some students might face obstacles to understand the ethics principles and its importance. Therefore, the application of active learning concepts along with engaging in community service is one of solutions to enhance the learning process. This paper will share our experience of teaching the “Ethical Issues in Information Technology” course to information technology undergraduate students. This paper covers the definition of active learning, what its activities and explains the teaching methodologies that have been applied to reach our objectives. Finally, the outcomes of this experience will be discussed as well.

Patterns of Computer-Mediated Communication: Youth, Identity and Mobile Devices

The widespread adoption of CMC in the context of education and research has given rise to a new ‎... more The widespread adoption of CMC in the context of education and research has given rise to a new ‎sub-culture in which patterns of communication, expectations of social communication exchanges, ‎and language formality have changed. In this paper, we describe a diary-log study of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) usage amongst youth in Arabic-Speaking populations. This qualitative study examined diary logs of CMC patterns of 61 youth participants, ages ranging between 14 to 24 years. Analysis involved trend analysis of the type of messages exchanged, size and timing of the messages, emotional expressions in CMC exchanges amongst youth, and the language transformations that are relevant to the design of interactions in CMC (e.g. introduction of Latin characters in the native Arabic language CMC due to constraints in mobile devices’ interfaces), and the CMC modes which involved attachments such as images, media or photos. Three variables were examined in the logs; gender, time of logging and linguistic patterns. Findings of this study showed that gender variations were not prevalent in CMC usage in the context of native Arabic-speaking youth. Results also suggest that patterns of CMC amongst youth vary according to the day of the week as well as the time of day. Prevalence of language transformations in Arabic CMC was also examined across genders and variations were found in the adoption of formal and colloquial CMC in Arabic. Implications for the design of CMC in the context of Education and Research will be discussed.

Electronic Healthcare Model Based on Smart Card for Saudi Medical Centers

This paper presents a healthcare model based on smart cards. The purpose of the proposed model is... more This paper presents a healthcare model based on smart cards. The purpose of the proposed model is to facilitate information exchange and integration across medical organizations. Currently, in Saudi Arabia, all medical centers have their own healthcare system. Each time a patient visits a clinic; a new file is created for him. Clinical information history related to the previous consultations is not available. Confidential information is not protected by the traditional folder. Prescriptions provided by doctors are signed manually and not efficiently authenticated by pharmacies. Claims are transmitted to the insurance companies by fax which makes them subject to falsification. The existing approach of the ministry of health in maintaining information about patients is not efficient, because healthcare institutions are not linked to a central system. In the proposed solution, the smart card will be used to store medical history of a patient that contains all diagnosis and drug prescriptions done in different medical centers. It will be used also to store keys and perform all the cryptographic computations. The medical institutions should adhere to the government healthcare organization system managed by the ministry of health. The healthcare organization should play the trusted third party as certification authority (CA). The information exchanged by the medical institutions should be protected and secured.

This paper describes a study of measuring the user experience of children in their interaction wi... more This paper describes a study of measuring the user experience of children in their interaction with digital books. An eye tracking experiment was conducted with eight children to examine their eye movements as they interacted with digital books in two different web sites. Measuring the child's user experience involved emotional ranking surveys, performance metrics, and retrospective probing by replaying videos of gaze of the child to explore the observed navigation behavior. Findings suggest effective methods for eliciting the user experience of children in the context of online digital books. Results also suggest different experiences exhibited by children in reading Arabic books in their native language based on the hosting sites' design considerations.
